GIS Certificate Mainpage

Before you start¡K

1.    Know how to get to PSU campus, the locations of major buildings on campus (e.g., Cramer Hall, Neuberger Hall, Smith Memorial Center) and Geography Office (i.e., Cramer Hall 424).

2.    Make a plan for the GIS courses you will take. Here is an overview of all GIS courses on PSU campus and the recommended sequences of taking them. Please note that some of the courses (as indicated in the document) cannot be used toward the certificate. Before the term starts, check the bulletin outside the Geography office or Geography course webpage for course offerings.

3.    Register for at least one credit for the term you are admitted (or call Geography Office if you need to defer your start term).

4.    Know the location of your classrooms.

5.    Get an Access Badge (or ¡§student prox card¡¨) in Neuberger Hall lobby.  (*Note: this is different from your PSU OneCard.)  This badge has a 5-digit number on it (not your PSU ID#), and we need the badge number in order to issue access to the computer lab.  Tip: avoid long lines by getting your badge before the term begins¡K any time after you are registered.

6.    Activate your ODIN (computer) account at the Helpdesk, located in the basement of Smith Memorial Student Union (18 SMSU).  This allows you to log in to any PSU computer on campus, including Geography labs.

7.    Learn to use campus lab computers, wireless network, webmail, library resources, etc.

8.    Check out student geography organizations, e.g., FOG, ASPRS.

9.     Geography Lab FAQ.

During the Program¡K

1.    If you need assistance with course planning, make appointments with the Program Director.

1.    If you have transfer credits from another institution, submit a GO-11C: Pre-admission or Transfer Credit form to the Geography Office Coordinator. <follow link for example of how to fill in this form>

2.      Take your courses.  Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above.

3.    If you were admitted conditionally or with deficiencies, submit the GO-7: Request for Change of Status form to the Geography Office Coordinator, stating that deficiencies (or prerequisites) have been satisfied.  <follow link for example of how to fill in this form>

Before you finish¡K

1.                  In the first week of the term you wish to graduate, submit the Application for Awarding of Graduate Certificate form to the Office of Graduate Studies.  This is currently not available on-line, but the pink half-sheet can be found at the Geography Office or Office of Graduate Studies.  <follow link for example of how to fill in this form>

2.                 By the end of the term you wish to graduate, fill out the Program Completion-Student Checklist and submit it to the Geography Office Coordinator (so that she/he can complete your GIS Program Completion Form when your final grades are in at the end of the term.)

If you have questions about any of this process, please feel free to contact either the Geography Office Coordinator (geog@pdx.edu, 503-725-3916) or Geoffrey Duh, Program Coordinator (jduh@pdx.edu, 503-725-3159).
